Appraisals

Performance reviews where the numbers come from the system rather than from memory.

The weakness of most appraisal processes is that the evidence is assembled from recollection in the week before the meeting. Here the metrics that can be computed are computed (hours recorded, matters closed, feedback received, learning completed), and the ones that need judgement are entered deliberately and marked as such.

A run can cover one person, a department or the firm, which makes a review cycle a single operation rather than a mail-merge.

Setup

  • Appraisal templates built from named metrics
  • Appraisal periods, with their own types and states
  • Each metric marked as automatically computed or manually entered

Running a cycle

  • Runs scoped to an individual, a department or the whole firm
  • Per-person records with their metric values attached
  • Official appraisals produced as the outcome of a run

Evidence

  • Automatic values drawn from time, matters, feedback, learning and compliance records
  • Manual values recorded with their source visible, so nobody has to guess which is which
  • Audit entries across periods, templates, runs, assignments and submissions
