Matters
Litigation and non-litigation work in one record, with the team, the court, the timeline and the paperwork attached to it.
A matter is the spine of the system. Almost everything else in the platform points at one: the hours recorded against it, the invoice raised from those hours, the documents filed under it, the channel the team argues in, the tasks nobody has finished and the audit entries that say who changed what.
That includes transactional work. Deals, drafting and contract review are matters with a different type on them rather than a separate module, because splitting them apart meant two records that behaved almost identically and two places to look for the same client's work.
Classification
- Matter types spanning litigation, transactions, advisory and compliance: civil, criminal, corporate, family, property, admiralty, AMCON, bankruptcy, fundamental rights, pre-election matters, appeals, mergers, acquisitions, due diligence, contract review, annual returns, regulatory filings and company secretarial work
- Status tracks from open through in progress, awaiting a court date, closed and appeal filed
- Priority, court and court type, and free-form tags for the firm's own cuts
The team on it
- Several staff assigned to one matter, each carrying a role on that matter rather than only their role in the firm
- Permissions resolved per matter, so being on the firm's staff list is not the same as being able to read this file
- A channel created for the matter automatically, with the assigned team already in it
History
- A timeline that records filings, hearings, uploads and status changes as they happen, rather than as someone remembers them
- Matter events with their own types and statuses, which appear on the firm calendar
- Client updates published deliberately, so progress reaches the client without internal notes going with it
